A downloadable asset pack

This is a pack of CC0-licensed music compatible with the Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis). You can use them for whatever you want! It includes a variety of genres. They're not all masterpieces, but I hope that they're useful somehow and that they inspire creativity :)

Each song is available in 3 formats:

  • .vgm: This is the asset that you will include in your Genesis/Mega Drive project. It's compatible with SGDK and some other tools.
  • .wav: This is the rendered sound file. It's most convenient for listening and also useful if you want to include the song in a game on a more modern platform (e.g. Unity, Unreal, etc.)
  • .dmf: This is the DefleMask source file. You can use it to reverse engineer and edit the song using an appropriate tool.

The .zip files contain songs. The .bin file is a rom containing all the tracks so that you can test on real hardware via flash cart.

The primary repository for these files is https://github.com/jerellsworth/free_vgms

You can listen to the songs on https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQWBbpRkgtR2vixfM4J_pDUie9k-dbxVz

By the way, these are all designed to loop; that's why the endings can seem abrupt.

I thought you might appreciate this piece of hardware, in the hands of the original master of Gen/MD music:  https://x.com/yuzokoshiro/status/1783416939215491453

That is so cool. I wish I had one, but I realize that a great deal of what makes that video so cool is that Yuzo Koshiro is playing it :)

Yeah, well put.  Sometimes I play his Gen/MD games, and I get really into his compositions.  I can sense the way the tracks are separated.  Watching him recreate the track real time gives me an even deeper appreciation.  In particular, the uniqueness of the track he chose from Bare Knuckle III/Streets of Rage 3.  That soundtrack has some real depth.
