A downloadable asset pack for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android

This is a pack of CC0-licensed music compatible with the Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis). You can use them for whatever you want! It includes a variety of genres. They're not all masterpieces, but I hope that they're useful somehow and that they inspire creativity :)

Each song is available in 3 formats:

  • .vgm: This is the asset that you will include in your Genesis/Mega Drive project. It's compatible with SGDK and some other tools.
  • .wav: This is the rendered sound file. It's most convenient for listening and also useful if you want to include the song in a game on a more modern platform (e.g. Unity, Unreal, etc.)
  • .dmf: This is the DefleMask source file. You can use it to reverse engineer and edit the song using an appropriate tool.

The .zip files contain songs. The .bin file is a rom containing all the tracks so that you can test on real hardware via flash cart.

The primary repository for these files is https://github.com/jerellsworth/free_vgms

You can listen to the songs on https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQWBbpRkgtR2vixfM4J_pDUie9k-dbxVz

By the way, these are all designed to loop; that's why the endings can seem abrupt.

hi, thank you already for your compositions and the fact of making them debt free.

I'm trying to play (A Case of) The Vapours for a demake project on megadrive,

I can play the sound but the loop doesn't seem not active, do you think it is possible to set a flag for the loop on your compositions.

If we wish we can talk about it (TuttiFrutti megadrive on youtube)

thanks !

Thanks for reaching out! It should be fixed here https://github.com/jerellsworth/free_vgms/blob/main/MD_tracks/the_vapours.vgm.

A lot of my older tracks don't have loops properly programmed, so let me know what else you want to use and I'll loop them.

It's perfect, thank you for your quick response.
It's working now, I still have a problem with the sound level (too high, but I might be able to resolve this with the XGM2 driver from SGDK

Please let me know how that works. I haven't tried XGM2 yet.

I have experienced the same issue with my games using the older XGM driver. Since XGM indiscriminately mixes in the music at full blast, I generally end up making new versions of my songs where the instruments are all just set to lower volumes at the beginning.

However, I'm at a loss for the correct solution here. I think the right thing to do is still to distribute the songs at full volume and let the application mix it as needed, since that's what you would do for any application other than XGM/SGDK, and XGM/SGDK happens to be the one weird, misbehaving use case. Or, put another way, if you're recording an orchestra and the recording is too loud, asking the orchestra to play more quietly is generally not the right way to fix it ðŸ¤·

well I just tested with XGM2 and yes it allows me to modify the sound volume.

However XGM2 poses other problems for me notably with the SFX, I will therefore have to find a solution to modify the sound volume at the source, I tried to open the .dmf file with Deflemask but without success.

Maybe you have a way for us to exchange privately on the subject.

Thank you

Sure. For starters, I'd love to figure out why you can't open the dmf file since giving away the source files is a key part of this project's mission. Please send me an email: safetystoatstudios@gmail.com

I thought you might appreciate this piece of hardware, in the hands of the original master of Gen/MD music:  https://x.com/yuzokoshiro/status/1783416939215491453

That is so cool. I wish I had one, but I realize that a great deal of what makes that video so cool is that Yuzo Koshiro is playing it :)

Yeah, well put.  Sometimes I play his Gen/MD games, and I get really into his compositions.  I can sense the way the tracks are separated.  Watching him recreate the track real time gives me an even deeper appreciation.  In particular, the uniqueness of the track he chose from Bare Knuckle III/Streets of Rage 3.  That soundtrack has some real depth.

Nice!
