War Marbles Legacy Release/Next Project Announcement

I'm calling WML good for now. It's pretty fun, especially two player. It doesn't have the strategic depth I was hoping to cultivate, but it was mostly intended as a mini game in our next project so it will do for now. Speaking of which:

Our Next Project!

There are so many video games. There are so many video games that, not only is it impossible to play every game within a lifetime, but it would be awfully hard to properly play every game released in 2024 within a lifetime. Making a video game today is like polishing a rock, tossing it into a field, and hoping that somebody notices it later.

So let us make the reasonable conclusion that the world probably has enough video games in it. There are still reasons to make a video game, but it doesn't interest me inherently to make another quirky indie metroidvania or another Mario clone. There are already plenty of quality specimens of both.

What kinds of game, then, am I interested in adding to the world? There are two major categories:

  • Concepts that, as far as I know, haven't been explored yet.
  • Games that tell my story in particular.

We've produced a few of the former category. I like those. We haven't done anything in the latter category though, and I've had this idea brewing for a while so seems like the time to prioritize it.

Here's the bullet points:

  • As I've mentioned a few times previously, the working title is The Suffering of Animals. There actually aren't any animals except for one dog, and the dog will probably suffer the least out of anybody.
  • You cannot pet the dog. He doesn't want to be pet.
  • It's a murder mystery.
  • It's a dialogue-driven adventure game.
  • The dialogue system is based on learning and reciting keywords, like in the middle trilogy of Ultima games. Somehow, this system will work on platforms that don't have a keyboard.
  • Rather than fighting, characters settle their differences over a solemn game of War Marbles.
  •  It's mostly about social anxiety.

I'm sure after reading those bullet points you can hardly wait to play it. Stay tuned. Here's some preliminary art:

I think I understand.  Another gen/md dev who used to make mini games is Kakoemon.  He seems to have taken a more meaningful road as well.  I hope your new direction is fun for you, and that it helps you express yourself fully.

Thanks! I like Kakoemon's stuff :)

I won't lie, I (selfishly) miss his mini games.  I'm glad he is doing more personal work though.  That's when game design has the potential to become modern art.
